Prescription to Learn®: a Health GPS for Patients & Families

In alignment with the goals of the Cancer Moonshot Initiative, CANCER101 and the Health Collaboratory launched Prescription to Learn® (P2L), a trusted ecosystem co-designed with patients and their families to address the overwhelming problem of information overload.

P2L is the “health GPS” that helps patients and their families navigate health information and understand solutions to address barriers they may encounter along the way. Through P2L, you can personalize your search for information and support from credible sources, access resources aligned with learning style preferences, act upon tips and life hacks crowd-sourced from the community, and view resource ratings from other patients, care partners, and clinicians. In addition, clinicians can prescribe resources to their patients and care partners.

“‘Where do I start?’ is a question we often hear from newly diagnosed patients and their families, who are inundated with a tsunami of information during a time they need to make life-altering decisions expeditiously,” said Sarah Krug, Executive Director, CANCER101 and Founder, Health Collaboratory. “Prescription to Learn was co-designed with patients and care partners to guide them through information from credible sources, provide them with the opportunity to personalize the educational journey based on their preferences, and empower them with the information they need to alleviate fear of the unknown. With answers to their questions and facts at their fingertips, they can focus on what’s most important—their health and well-being. It’s an honor that our collaborative intervention has been highlighted by the White House’s Cancer Moonshot Taskforce, spearheaded by Vice President Joseph Biden, as well as the Biden Cancer Initiative and we are proud to join others in accelerating progress to end cancer as we know it.”

Although P2L has launched in cancer, we will continue to build in other conditions over time, as well as expand globally. With touch points at over 1,300 hospitals, community practices, and patient advocacy organizations, P2L provides a lifeline to patients and their care partners encouraging them to play an active role in their care and partner with their healthcare team to make more informed medical decisions. In addition, through its expanded ecosystem, P2L was recognized under the Biden Cancer Initiative as an innovative solution focused on the “Urgency of Now” in the fight against cancer. P2L partnered with several hospitals in its launch including University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Moffitt Cancer Center, Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone, and Mayo Clinic.

The Patient Shark Tank is a tribe of patients and caregivers that provide perspective in the design, development, and/or continuous improvement of healthcare innovation using standard criteria. The assessment is across 12 domains which distill down into a 3 part score. The maximum score is 20, 20, 20, which we finally achieved (third time is a charm), which emphasizes the need for continuous improvement even when you co-design innovations with patients!
